Five Secrets to Great Speech Writing
In his essay, "Politics and the English Language", George Orwell listed five rules for effective writing that apply to speeches:
- Never use a long word when a short one will do.
- If it's possible to cut a word, always cut it out.
- Never use the passive voice where you can use the active voice.
- Never use a foreign phrase, a scientific word or jargon if you can think of an everyday plain-English equivalent.
- Break any of these rules sooner than say anything barbarous.
