Five Secrets to Great Speech Writing

  • Never use a long word when a short word will do.
  • If it’s possible to cut a word, always cut it out.
  • Never use the passive voice where you can use the active voice.
  • Never use a foreign phrase, a scientific word or jargon if you can think of an everyday plain-English equivalent.
  • Break any of these rules sooner than say anything barbarous.
